Day 173:Chicago Marine Safety Station

Chicago Marine Safety Station [CMSS}..
It accomodates Chicago Marine Police, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and the United States Coast Guard.
The CMSS was renovated in 2005 .. and now includes..
– High-tech computerized command center,
– Joint Operations Conference room with video screen,
– Interior space that includes three dormers,
– Floating boat dock system provided by the Chicago Park District.
The station also houses Chicago’s first geothermal system designed to decrease fuel consumption by making good use of water from the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. The Illinois Clean Energy Foundation provided the grant for the system.

This building was known by many names throughout the years, including, Coast Guard Station Old Chicago, Coast Guard Lifeboat Station Old Chicago, Coast Guard Station Chicago, Chicago Police Marine Unit Headquarters and now after the completed revitalization, it’s named Chicago Marine Safety Station..

“The Marine Safety Station is a great example of the city, state, and federal governments – all working together – to benefit not only the City, but also Lake Michigan, Chicago’s greatest natural resource”…

-Mayor Richard M. Daley

Day 171: Water Tower No. 2

This is the Water Tower No. 2.  One of 3 left in Chicago, this truck was in action from the mid 1920’s- late 1960’s and can be seen on display at the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago.  This truck has no pumps so it relies on other engines to pump the water to the truck.  Requiring a hand crank to lift the nozzles into place, the Water Tower can spray as much water as about 4 single trucks.

Day 168: Muster at the Chicago Fire Academy

Today was the Muster at the Chicago Fire Academy hosted by the 5-11 Club of Chicago. This event ran from 8am-1pm today and hosted a variety of antique and newer fire apparatus and fire equipment.  Demonstrations were done using fire trucks from the 1920’s through today.  Vendors were on site for the firematic swap meet and there as a apparatus parade at 9:30am.

Here is just one of the many photos that were taken today (keep a look out for more photos to be posted throughout the week).  This is a photo of a ladder extended from a ladder truck inside the confines of the Chicago Fire Academy.

Day 166: Hawks in the Skyline

Even though our beloved Blackhawks did not take home the Stanley Cup this year (congratulations are in order for the Boston Bruins who ended their 39 year Cup drought), this picture really says a lot about the support a city has for their team.
