Day 233: Missing Man Formation

The Lima Lima Flight Team flies an emotional narration explaining the missing man tribute and honoring those who have died in the line of duty precedes the approach of the 6 ship wedge.  As taps begins, the #3 pilot turns off his lights and smoke and departs, leaving the missing man formation to pass in front of the crowd.

Day 232: Falling from the Sky

In attending the 53rd Annual Chicago Air & Water Show, I caught a shot of these guys free falling from the sky.  (sorry for the image quality as I don’t have a great zoom lens quite yet- but I thought it was a great shot anyways)

Day 229: Navy Pier Headhouse

The two major buildings on the Navy Pier are the Headhouse and Auditorium – both were designed by the architect Charles Summer Frost and constructed in 1916.

The most western building, a brick and terra cotta building with two prominent towers is the Navy Pier Headhouse. The name was derived from the area, which at the time was known as the Headlands. Each tower housed a huge 2-million liter tank for the fire sprinkler system. The Headhouse is now home to Chicago’s children museum. At the western side of the building is the 19 acre (8 ha) Gateway Park, featuring a modern, computerized granite fountain with 240 jets.

Day 228: Uniform Cap

A Chicago fireman’s class “A” uniform cap sits on the dash of a ladder truck.

Steve Cohen, the President of Lighthouse Uniform Company, is the creator of the 9/11 Commemorative Chin Strap which features a red bloodline down the middle of the black, white or gold chin straps normally worn on the dress cap.  As we are approaching the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the Lighthouse has partnered with State Fire Department Associations and donates $5 for every strap sold in that state to the association.  His hope is that all of the hundreds of thousands of firefighters who take part in events commemorating the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks will be wearing the 9/11 Commemorative Chin Straps.

In the photo above the chinstrap is the black leather band that sits just above the brim which is attached to the cap on both sides with a button.

“Never forget means never forgetting, and that needs a visual.”                                       ~Jerry Naylis, retired fire chief in New Jersey
