Day 193: Lighthouse around the Corner
While traveling down the lakefront path behind the Shedd Aquarium, the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse peeks into view from around the corner.

The Chicago Harbor Lighthouse is the city’s only remaining lighthouse (and one of only two lighthouses in Illinois), but the city’s location makes the lighthouse particularly important in the history of Chicago and Great Lakes transportation.
The 1800s saw Chicago Harbor become an important strategic military location and shipping route, and the U. S. government authorized the construction of the harbor’s first lighthouse in 1832 to help guide the ever-increasing water traffic.
Chicago experienced rapid growth as the century progressed and in 1850 the government decommissioned the original Chicago Harbor Lighthouse.
Two other lights appeared at the harbor to take it’s place.

Day 192: Honor Flight Chicago
Bringing Chicago’s Vets to DC – with Honor.

Active duty Sailors and Marines wait at attention at Midway airport as WWII vets return home from a visit to Washington D.C.
Honor Flight Chicago was founded to recognize our Veterans – most specifically our WWII Veterans – with a day of honor, remembrance and celebration from a proud and grateful nation.
Honor Flight Chicago, a 501c3 non-profit organization, was founded in February, 2008, by Mary Pettinato, Jeanmarie Kapp, Nancy Kapp, and Suzanne Stanits. Four entrepreneurial Chicago women asked themselves what they could do to honor and thank our Veterans – especially our WWII Veterans – whose courage and determination to do the job they were sent to do still echoes down the years. These four individuals joined forces when they saw an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our Veterans. Their own lives have been profoundly touched and changed by the Honor Flight Chicago experience – an experience that they hope will continue to inspire others to honor our Veterans.
We are very proud of our 700+ Guardians and Volunteers who work tirelessly year round to not only raise money for these flights, but also to provide Veteran outreach, community and school education, and public relations support. Without their dedication and commitment, we would not be able to deliver on the promise of Honor Flight Chicago.
Honor Flight Chicago has been recognized by the State of Illinois as a Homefront Hero for its patriotism, community spirit and willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty to support our brave troops and their families. Former Lt. Governor Pat Quinn presented the award September 7, 2008.
Day 191: Sunset Over Lakeside
A beautiful sunset over the crowd at the final day of the DMB Caravan tour. The sunset is very deceiving as it set over a not-so-beautiful venue.
